What is Reflexology? Reflexology is not a new therapy but one that has been practised in some form for thousands of years. From ancient texts, illustrations and artefact we know that the early Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Russians & Egyptians worked on the feet to promote good health. The oldest documentation depicting the practise of Reflexology was found in a physicians tomb in Egypt dated around 2330BC.
The hieroglyphic reads: Patient ‘Do not hurt me’, Practitioner ‘I shall act so you praise me’ Reflexology deals with the principal that there are reflex points on the hands and feet which correspond to all of the body’s glands, organs and structures. By manipulating or applying specific pressure techniques to the different reflex points, it is possible to initiate healing in the corresponding area of the body. When illness or imbalances occur, the energy channels that flow through our bodies become blocked. A Reflexology treatment aims to destroy these blockages, allowing energy to flow freely again and restoring the body’s natural balance and good health. Reflexology is a natural non invasive therapy which uses only the therapist’s hands – mainly their thumbs, to apply gentle pressure to the feet or hands to encourage the body to re-balance itself at its own pace, often counteracting a lifetime of misuse. It encourages both relaxation and stimulation: The first helps the body rebuild its energy resources and recover from illness and disease. The second helps activate circulation and the nervous system, making them both more efficient and therefore benefiting the body as a whole. Reflexology should not hurt, but some areas may feel tender, different or a little uncomfortable – this is an indication of imbalance or tension in a corresponding part of the body. It is a holistic treatment, meaning it works on the principal that the whole body must be treated, if one area is out of balance then other areas will be too, so all the reflexes are worked on during a treatment.
